What controls GIF size

GIF size grows with pixels × frames, so width and frame rate matter most.

  • Width: 480 px for chat, 600 px for email, 800 px for docs and READMEs.
  • Frame rate: 10–15 fps for UI, 15–20 fps for fast camera motion.
  • Length: every second at 15 fps adds 15 frames. Trim hard.

Choose quality by eye

A GIF frame holds at most 256 colors, so gradients need dithering. Compare next to Quality renders a sample of your clip at each step, with its estimated size.

FAQ

Questions, answered

How do I convert MP4 to GIF without losing quality?
Some loss is unavoidable with 256 colors. Crop instead of shrinking, keep 12–15 fps, and pick a higher Quality step.
Can I combine several MP4s into one GIF?
Yes. Drop them all in, arrange and trim them on the timeline, and export one GIF.
What’s the best frame rate for a GIF?
12–15 fps for screen recordings and most clips. Go higher only for fast motion; size grows with every frame.
