Why convert a GIF to MP4

MP4 stores only what changes between frames and has full color, so the same clip is usually many times smaller and looks better. WhatsApp and X convert GIFs to video anyway; doing it yourself lets you pick the crop and quality.

Using MP4 instead of a GIF on a website

A video element with autoplay, muted, loop and playsinline behaves like a GIF at a fraction of the size. Keep the GIF where video isn’t allowed: READMEs, email and image-only docs tools.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Why is MP4 smaller than GIF?
MP4 stores only the differences between frames, with full color. GIF compresses every frame on its own with 256 colors.
How do I send a GIF on WhatsApp?
WhatsApp sends GIFs as short looping MP4s. Export a Video with the WhatsApp preset and keep it under 16 MB.
Will the MP4 loop?
That’s up to the player. WhatsApp and X loop short clips; on a website, add loop to the video element.
