Limits change. 1 MB = 1,048,576 bytes.

Hard limits vs. sensible targets

Slack and Jira accept files up to 1 GB, but a huge GIF is miserable to load, so those presets aim under 10 MB. Where the limit really bites (GitHub’s 10 MB, Product Hunt’s 3 MB, a 128 KB Slack emoji), presets aim about 8% under it.

When you’re over the limit

Lower the width first, then frame rate, then length, then colors. Cropping away static margins is free. More in Compress GIF; if the destination takes video, GIF to MP4 is usually the bigger win.
